Come slowly, Eden
Lips unused to thee.
Bashful, sip thy jasmines,
As the fainting bee,
Reaching late his flower,
Round her chamber hums,
Counts his nectars -alights,
And is lost in balms! ~Emily Dickinson

May your Valentine's Day be filled with nectar, kisses and humming chambers.
I generally hate Valentine's Day, though. I keep having flashbacks to grade school, where the number of Valentine cards you got was such a big deal. It didn't get much better as an adult. Once my husband gave me a metal table for the basement so I could fold laundry. He has been since warned that practical presents are prohibited. What's the best/worst gift you've ever gotten?

And Happy (early) Valentine's Day to you! The only Valentine's presents I've received have been from my parents. I consider myself lucky I haven't gotten any bad presents on the holiday.

I'm having to explain to my daughter why she has to give a card expressing her affection to a boy who's been bullying her all year. Sigh! Mandatory generic gifting in school. Sigh!

My fun task this year was being assigned "healthy" snacks (store bought, nothing homemade allowed) for the Valentine's party today. We finally went with Goldfish crackers.

Then my daughter gave me the rundown of what she was given yesterday as "rewards"; suckers for an A, a small chocolate bar for a paper, gum for something or other. Honestly.

We have wine at home, DH doesn't say a word when I spend money on romance novels, and other than that I don't need anything! It isn't fun to spend in this economy--except on the house repairs, which are never-ending.

We always make heart pizzas on Valentines with the kids.

Oh, hey, how was the vaca?

Gillian, we're leaving Sunday! Can't wait. I love pizza, homemade or otherwise. It is my favorite, perfect food. No beer or wine necessary.

Ely, Happy V-Day! Virtual chocolate for you!

Keira, that's the law now---all or nothing. I guess it spares hurt feelings, but kids will get crushed anyway. I can remember going thru the packets of V-cards picking out the 'good' ones for my favorite friends and saving the 'bad' ones for the bad guys, LOL.

I've been reading John Donne's love poems this week. He's a great poet for Valentine's week because he writes about so many parts of love.

Some favorite lines:
For love all love of other sights controls,
And makes one little room an everywhere.
“The Good Morrow”

Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere ;
This bed thy center is, these walls thy sphere.
“The Sun Rising”

I am two fools, I know,
For loving, and for saying so
In whining poetry.
“The Triple Fool”

Love's mysteries in souls do grow,
But yet the body is his book.
“The Ecstasy”

My best Valentine's gift? A book of John Donne's poetry. I've read from this book every February for more years than I intend to divulge. :)

Dr. Phil's show today had "worst valentine's presents" as one of the segments. The "winner" was a woman whose husband cut a heart out of a cardboard target that had a turkey painted on it. (Yes, gobble, gobble.) He was a hunter and was practicing for turkey hunting season. The husband deserves a thumping with the cardboard heart. The wife was given a dozen roses each week for a year from Dr. Phil for having to put up with, um, her turkey of a husband.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation Maggie!

Anon, good to know Oprah and I are on the same wavelength, LOL. Now, if only I had her billions...and her wardrobe...and her audience...

Janga, those snippets are wonderful. You always leave the best comments!

My husband has only recently gone out and bought me a wee bouquet of flowers. I hate valentines card receiving and giving in grade school too!

Both my kids gave to everyone in the class, my youngest even wrote out her own cards this year, I was so proud of her, mind you, she wrote one for herself too because she was on the list the teacher gave her. Her brother teases a lot about that!

Happy St. Valentine's Day! I admit, I'm a huge lover of this holiday. It's one of my favorites. Worst gift -- an awkward serenade from a boyfriend. i suppose it makes me a horrible person for saying that was the worst but it was so awkward to sit there and listen to it, especially after he'd been so grouchy about the dinner. Vdays are better without bfs! I did get some kissing hippos one year. I think those were my favorit because I'm a fan of hippos.

A turkey target heart? Really?! lol wow....

Steph--Kissing hippos? I need more info. I only know Hungry Hungry Hippos, LOL.

Tiff, your daughter must be so adorable! That's a cute story you can tell to embarrass her when she's a teen.
